Gloucestershire Old Spot Pigs

Gloucestershire Old Spots; the orchard pigs.

What is an Old Spot?

The Gloucestershire Old Spot Pig
(or Old Spot or GOS Pig for short), descended from a region in Gloucestershire, England known as the Vale of Berkeley. Recognized as the oldest pedigree spotted pig in the world, the GOS was once popular with small family farms, where they were raised on dairy by-products (such as whey) and orchard "drop fruit," giving these pigs the nicknames "cottage pig" and "orchard pig." This breed is revered as an excellent lard producer providing families with lard for cooking and craft making. GOS are often noted for their rich dark colored marbled meat which was said to be a favorite of British Royalty.

This breed is noted for its unique spotted look featuring long lop ears and dished faces. Other breed characteristics include extremely docile attitudes, excellent natural mothering abilities, cold hardiness and ability to maintain themselves well on natural forages.

Meet Our Sows:

Jezzebelle

Jezzebelle is a really gorgeous  GOSA registered girl out of the Red Princess Mary lineage. She is the result of the meticulous planning put into the initial breedings from the Hampshire College Farm's Heritage Pig Breeding Program. She provides a highly stylized signature GOS look of a dished face and a deep ham in a compact stocky frame. The definition of breed standard with a gentle disposition.

Meet Our Spots at Stud:

Arlo is a lovely long bodied and high fronted boar out of Baldwin Brooke Farms in Canterbury CT. He is GOSA registered and represents the Black Patrick pedigree line of Old spots. He boasts an impressively low inbreeding coefficient and sires large healthy litters.. Arlo is currently available at stud for live service only. We are working to get him trained as an AI stud as well.

Prudence

Another lovely female produced by the Hampshire College Farm's summer 2017 litters. Prudence is also a GOSA Princess Mary and boasts an exceptionally low coefficient of inbreeding (Under 2%); something hard to come by these days. She brings style and length to her offspring as well as exceptional maternal production lines as her dam produced 13 litters during her breeding career all with at least 9 piglets each. She is truly the whole package.
